From an ONDA email: The Bureau of Land Management in Oregon will soon begin a process to amend the Southeast Oregon and Lakeview Resource Management Plans (RMPs) to determine the future management of millions of acres in the Hart-Sheldon and Owyhee regions. These upcoming management plan amendments will address a narrow range of issues including Lands with Wilderness Characteristics, travel management and grazing management. In the coming months we will share a series of updates taking a deeper look at the specific issues that will be addressed during each of these planning processes. This is the first of these RMP updates. Management Plan Topic: Lands with Wilderness Characteristics (LWCs) Lands with wilderness characteristics are one of the main issues the BLM will be addressing in both of the RMP amendments. LWCs are areas that have been inventoried and found to have all of the attributes of a wilderness area, but most often are not managed to protect those wilderness values. Through the RMP amendments, the BLM can choose to manage these LWC units to retain their wilderness values, thereby maintaining their eligibility to become wilderness in the future. Much like wilderness areas, LWC units provide the public with outstanding opportunities for primitive recreation, solitude, and a chance to experience natural open spaces. Without management that retains their values, these areas face real threats of being stripped of their wilderness character as a result of other land uses. By getting involved and commenting on the RMP amendment process, you can assist the BLM in determining how best to manage LWC units. For more information about how to get involved in the RMP efforts, contact Jeremy Austin at jeremy@onda.org Best
