We got some great ones at Horseshoe Lake on Sunday. "Trail"-finding was a bit tricky in the snow, though. And no sun...

Yeah that's about what I thought. I'm a little surprised to see Horseshoe icing up already though. Thanks all.

The Western larches are peaking right now east of Chinook Pass.

I've seen western larches driving along Blewett and over White Pass, but are there any good hikes through these?

The Table Mtn trail http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/okawen/recreation/hiking/recarea/?recid=57853&actid=50 From along roads 9716 and 9712 and/or the Ken Wilcox / Haney Meadow campground provides short hike with some viewing of Western Larch. At least if the road isn't already snow covered. Other info (ski oriented -- but to the same area) http://www.justgetout.net/Wenatchee/18351 http://www.justgetout.net/ClientFiles/8ecf9e69-8f8f-419d-91d8-10c7ca9cbcbb/BlewettPass-Skiing2.JPG

Didn't most of Table Mt. burn in the fire a few years ago?

Yes there was the table mtn fire -- and it burned up the old Haney Meadows cabin -- however it didn't burn the forest with enough intensity to leave a charred wasteland. I have been to the area post fire in the fall and the western larch were still sporting a lot of of color -- the area west of Table Mtn along road 9716 and the first bit of 9712 were barely touched by the fire -- and actually this section has a greater density of western larch than the area around Haney Meadows.

There are some great stands of western larch at the junction of the Teanaway Ridge and County Line trails in the Iron Bear area.

If you wanted to see western larches up close from a road bike, and ideally to lean the bike against a nice yellow one for a picture, where would you go? Assume the bike can handle dirt roads just fine, but not snow. And that a loop is preferable over an out-and-back.

Shevlin park today. Nice paved road or a lot of cross bikes ride the easy trails too. Actually, way down south here, the Western Larch is not fully peaking yet, although a day or two could be it. No cars allowed on the road:

I wound up driving to Blewett Pass and riding to the Tronsen Ridge trailhead and a little beyond to see the larches and the rest of the scenery. I'd been up behind Liberty before but not to this area. It was pretty. Low traffic too.
