Just came down from Cooney lake in the sawtooths. Prime season, temp in the 20's. Lake freezing over. Put on your boots and go.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference. Robert Frost

According to Mathews, there are two larches native to Washington state: the western larch (Larix occidentalis) and subalpine larch (Larix lyallii).
I've been meaning to start a thread about this book, and still plan to. For now, I'd just like to say that it's wonderful!

Stephen Arno has written some very interesting papers about Lyall's larches. I tried to find one I had read some time back but was unable to find it. I did find this: http://na.fs.fed.us/spfo/pubs/silvics_manual/Volume_1/vol1_Table_of_contents.htm

A pair of interesting larch articles that I found some years ago: larix lyalii (alpine larch) larix occidentalis (western larch)

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.--E.Abbey

I hiked Easy Pass yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. Larches were just past peak and plenty of needles still on the trees, covered in snow.

I haven't noticed any reports yet of the western larches, eg around Blewett. Any word on those?

I drove through there today and they are starting to show some color. Should be good in a week. They are about done in the Entiat. Wind was blowing lots of needles off today.

Still remember 1980. Working out of the Engineering center there in Wenatchee for the USFS. One day we were doing some work up in the Beehive area above Wenatchee. Drove past a couple klutzes who had just cut down a rather large green western larch aka Tamarack. Was rather obvious to us. But we continued on our way. No idea if the crew chief reported it.

I did not notice any mushrooms in the forest. No snow at trailhead on Saturday. Apparently Sunday was quite a bit warmer. Check the Sunday trail reports at WTA and photos show a lot more snow melting plus sunny weather.

Western larches are just starting to go gold in nearby Shevlin Park. Plenty of other color in the meantime......
