A loop hike/scramble in the Teanaway that includes three passes and three peaks... and if you happen to be partial to earth tones, this trip might be for you. Starting (~4240') at the Esmeralda Basin Trailhead, we hiked a quarter-mile and turned onto Ingalls Way Trail #1390... which we followed for ~1.5 miles... where we took the Longs Pass Trail #1229 up to Longs Pass (~6220'). From Longs Pass we left the main trail and headed cross-country... following the ridge to Point 6878 (aka 'Not Hinkhouse' Peak)... then scrambled down to Ingalls Pass (~6500')... where we opted to stay on the south side of Fortune Peak's SE ridge... gradually working our way over to a very dry Lake Camp Fire Girls... then up to Fortune's SE ridge... where we followed the ridge on up to Fortune Peak (7382'). From the Fortune Peak summit we followed a faint path down Fortune's west ridge to ~6500 feet... where we stepped across the Lake Ann Trail and continued cross-country along the ridge to Point 6598 (aka Small Fortune)... then continued cross-country down to Fortune Creek Pass (~5980') where we followed the Esmeralda Basin Trail for 3 miles back to the car. A 9.5 mile loop... gaining 3993 feet of elevation. The best scrambling was from the summit of 'Not Hinkhouse' Peak down to Ingalls Pass... where a person can choose a route that fits their personality... selecting from a variety of Class 2, Class 3 and/or Class 4 terrain. Photos, trailhead directions and downloadable GPS track of our loop trip. ..

"Teanaway 70" Peaks List... a guide to hiking and scrambling in the Teanaway Area. ----------------

Interesting report for me -- Fortune is the last of the Teanaway Twenty I have yet to do. This gives me some ideas for making it more interesting.

A fun and interesting way to stay up high and enjoy the scenery. This high route will most likely see a repeat.

I think we saw you at the Preston Park and Ride that morning. We were headed up to scramble Bill's Peak.

Monty, this is definitely a fun route to do Fortune more so than the trail or traversing from South Ingalls.
