I sent this recipe (given to me by author Robert Wood) to Ski via the private message channel and he seemed to think it would be of interest to the hiking community, at any rate for those interested in the combination Olympic mountains/the area's history & guide books/baking.
I made the cookies a few weeks ago and they turned out pretty good. I cut down on the sugar and added more dates + used butter instead of "lite" margarine.

A wonderful recipe; I will bake these as well!

I just made these. I, too, used butter instead of margarine. I didn't have cloves or nutmeg, but the lemon/ginger flavors on their own are a tasty combination. They're so good without the missing spices, I'll probably continue to make them that way. Thanks for a great recipe!
Any history on its origin?

33 cookies? I only got 12! By making them big I convince myself I've eaten 1 cookie, when in fact it's the equivalent of almost 3.

I'd love to try one, just based on recipe being sourced from Robert Wood. The Traveler may have hiked more miles in a year, but Wood shared and led others into the Olympics.
I'll need to make a batch when I have opportunity to give most away.

Great to know that some of you have already baked and enjoyed his cookies. That being said I don't know where he got the recipe from or if he renamed an already existing recipe to "Olympic cookies". But I like to think he experimented himself and came up with it. I received it in 1991 (don't remember if I baked them then) but wanted to test a batch before passing it on to others. PS - don't omit the lemon extract.

Jask, I agree. Don't omit the lemon extract. That was a great flavor in the cookie.
I will add a little more of the nutmeg/clove though.
