The Tilly Jane trailhead is usually one of the quieter spots around Hood, but on Thursday morning I pulled in to find, quite surprisingly, an almost full parking area. Conditions were clear and sunny and I was able to skin up to the A-frame in just a t-shirt. When I arrived at the cabin it looked like a full house, with piles of skis and snowshoes sitting outside. No one was yet stirring, so I continued on. As I got close to treeline the winds began to pick up. I encountered a pair of skiers coming down who said that conditions were intense and they had turned around. The wind gusts became increasingly fierce. When I got to the stone shelter, I was going to go inside to layer-up, but when I opened the door I found that it was filled with snow. I quickly added some layers outside and continued on. I've been in some pretty bad winds before, but when I got to about 7,400 feet things just got flat-out scary. I decided to pull skins and get out of there. The mountain fought me though, and it took great effort just to get my skis back on and stand up. Snow conditions for skiing were overall pretty good, but skiing into the wind took some effort. Eventually I made it back to the treeline and then had a fun but uneventful ski back to the car. About 9 miles RT and 3,700 ft. of gain. Video: Intense winds on Mt. Hood

Thanks for the video. Just words don't do it justice.

What'ya estimate mph?
I can't even begin to guess how fast the gusts were, but the sustained winds were at least 50 mph.

Yikes, that wind is scary indeed! I can't imagine trying to put a tent up in that......or keeping it up!

Passing rocks and trees like they were standing still

I watched a guy step out of his tent on the Coleman glacier at 3:00 am in wind like that. The tent, sleeping bag, pack, etc immediately blew off into the void... be sure to stake it down.
