We're gonna take our chances, heading early Sat AM to friends' place in Madras with a full tank of gas and plenty of groceries. No way I'm gonna miss a chance to be in the zone of totality this time around. Should be a good party. Madras Chamber of Commerce describes today's traffic as "like a normal Friday afternoon ahead of a three-day weekend."

I'm packed, gassed, iced and watered. Getting excited, been watching the morning moon phases shrink down like a timer... We roll at 7AM, good luck to eclipse chasers everywhere.

For those trying to dodge smoke.... This oregon smoke map is the best resource I have found so far. I was just made aware of it today. click on the "view full map" at the bottom of the map that comes up.

Looks like there are going to be a few more in the area than I anticipated. Charleston news

My daughters left Seattle at 4:30am saturday. They are making record time and I see NO traffic on any of the roads on tripcheck so far. In fact the road cams show eerily vacant roads. Bend is like a ghost town and stores and gas stations are restocking after the Locals stocked up as they would before a big snow storm or something. It is a very smokey ghost town though. The Milli fire is turning into a major forest fire and they just can't seem to get it contained(0%) and the PNW smoke map is looking bad for the overall area. There was some hope the fires would be contained by now and smoke would be dispersing a bit. So unless people are off to a late start, as long as you stay away from Madras and Prineville, so far so good.

In place in Madras. No traffic issues between Eburg and here. Smoke haze to the N and far to the S, clear over Madras. Locals say so far the hype re crowds greatly exceeds reality.

My daughters made it from Seattle to Bend, with stops and getting stuck behind a couple of slow RV's coming over Santiam (typical in Summer) in 6 hours. That is good time on a normal day. Tripcheck still shows eerily vacant roads.

That's awesome. I couldn't believe you all jumped off into that supposed maelstrom heading south. Amazing to hear that it all worked out. up.gif ~z

I read Friday that the estimated containment date for the Milli fire is Oct. 1st. Lordy, I hope you guys get rain before then!

Watched about an 80% eclipse with home made pin hole device and some eclipse glasses. High humidity here. About 15 minutes later we had a huge downpour with high winds. Wonder if the rapid drop in temperature catalyzed this? The pin hole device is cool for the physics aspects, the colors were cool with the glasses.

Check out this time-lapse of Liberty Bridge in Falls Park at Greeneville, South Carolina. It was pretty hot down there and many people are hanging out in the water to stay cool. Then suddenly the sky gets dark. Found on the Wiki page for today's eclipse. ~z
