Glen Campbell passed away today. Quote from Rolling Stone article: Glen Campbell, the indelible voice behind 21 Top 40 hits including "Rhinestone Cowboy," "Wichita Lineman" and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," died Tuesday. He was 81. A rep for Universal Music Group, Campbell's record label, confirmed the singer's death to Rolling Stone. During a career that spanned six decades, Campbell sold over 45 million records. In 1968, one of his biggest years, he outsold the Beatles.
Here's a great article in the Nashville Tennessean. (Lots of content and tribute there.) Quote: Glen Travis Campbell brought country music to new audiences. He found success as a session musician before embarking on a solo career that included smashes “Gentle On My Mind,” “Galveston,” “Wichita Lineman” and “Rhinestone Cowboy” and that landed him in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
And quote: "Had Glen Campbell 'only' played guitar and never voiced a note, he would have spent a lifetime as one of America’s most consequential recording musicians," said Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, in a statement. "Had he never played guitar and 'only' sung, his voice would rank with American music’s most riveting, expressive, and enduring. He left indelible marks as a musician, a singer, and an entertainer, and he bravely shared his incalculable talent with adoring audiences even as he fought a cruel and dreaded disease. To all of us who heard and loved his soulful music, he was a delight." Some of the sound track of my youth. ~z

Campbell had local connection. He played the Evergreen Ballroom east of Lacey for several months once. He had a bed in a large closet in the back. The Ballroom burned to the ground years ago.
I like his twelve string guitar instrumental album.

I liked his music in the 60's. BUT....even if he had never had all THOSE hits....he should be remembered as a member of "the wrecking crew"....who did instrumental backing and voice for just about everyone in the 60 and early 70s! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wrecking_Crew_(music). All the way from artists like the Ronettes and Count Basie and the Beach Boys to Dylan, Neil Young, Dizzy Gillespie and Ray Charles.....on and on and on. Part of the Phil Spector "wall of sound"
I watched a pretty cool documentary movie, a few years ago, by the same name - "The Wrecking Crew". Good movie! http://www.wreckingcrewfilm.com/about.php
RIP

Campbell was a wicked blues guitar virtuoso before he became a television country star. By then he had played on practically every hit record from LA in the sixties, including the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations".

Another great talent gone. I remember watching his show with my Dad.
He sounded darn good on the old AM radio in the Chevy Bel air too.

He'll be missed by me to be sure. RIP Mr. Campbell.
