Bear tracks in ONP ~Dec 20, 2015; believe Sir Hikes saw a bunch of activity in ONP during the '14-'15 winter that wasn't. Don't believe I've seen much in Cascades during the same time, but seem to remember others posting TRs with fresh tracks.

I was going to do a little drop (skiing) off a rock on a north facing slope in February in North Idaho one time.
As I skied closer to the drop it looked a little higher than I wanted to attempt so I slowed and stopped at the edge to peer over.
When I looked over the edge there was a little (<200lbs) black bear staring back up at me.
The rock formed the entrance of its den and it was just checking things out on a sunny day.
It took off and I skied away from it in the opposite direction, hopefully so that it would not be too unnerved to return to its den.

I've seen bears in March around Mt Pilchuck, particularly Boardman/Ashland Lakes.
Speaking of bears, I wandered into a huge bear den on Cultus Mountain (east of Big Lake) back in 1970 while I was exploring rock climbing opportunities on the mountain. Fortunately no one was home, but it had been obviously occupied by several bears.

Not the Cascades, but I did see grizzly tracks on the lower slopes of the Tetons in mid-December. I always wondered if the bear just hadn't gone to bed yet or randomly came out of its hibernation den.

I've never seen a bear in winter. If a bear is out, how would its behavior differ?

It's my understanding that bears don't truly hybernate and they do leave their dens periodically during the winter months. So I guess it would be possible to run into one in the winter, although far less likely.

I have seen bear tracks near Airplane lake about Christmas time, Also bear tracks in January near Skykomish

Many years ago when my family had a cabin at Snoqualmie Pass (Conifer Estates area)(now hugely populated). When there were only 15 cabins in the area, we followed bear tracks in the snow as the bear walked to each house in the area, then we followed the tracks to our cabin later in the day. It had walked near our front door!! The tracks then led off East towards Hyak...

I thought this was going end up with, and then we found him sleeping in bed that was juuust right!
Goldilocks has always been a personal favorite bedtime story. Love the Jan Brett version.
