Has anyone experienced flaking and peeling of the finish on their MSR Lightning Explores? I bought these thinking they would hold up pretty well and was expecting normal wear and tear. Only after about 10 miles on a lot of hard pack the finish is peeling/flaking off a lot. Normal? Thanks!

That doesn't sound normal. Powder coating doesn't usually "flake" off when it is done properly. Give them a call and see what their take is.

Nature exists with a stark indifference to humans' situation.

Thanks for the response. I've sent pics and questions to Creative Designs yesterday. Waiting for them to get back with me. Their site says it can take two days to respond, I'll call them tomorrow if I don't hear from them by noon.

Or, if you're local to the Seattle area, you can swing by their repair and warranty service department at their facility (down by First Ave and Spokane St.), snowshoes in hand.

I spoke to a customer service rep today. Liz couldn't confirm that the explore model was either powder coated or just painted or a botched powder coating job. She said I could send them in for refinishing. With the binding adjustment tab breaking also I decided to return them to amazon and buy the Ascent model. Their website says they're powder coated so hopefully they'll be ok. Thanks .

Received and used the Ascents over the weekend. A much better choice. No issues at all.
