On Saturday, I visited the old Haystack Lookout site in Snohomish County off Highway 2 near Sultan. This inspired me to figure out the Haystack situation in Skagit County.
This is SE of Sedro Woolley.
Similar to Snohomish County, Skagit County has a Haystack Mountain and again the lookout called Haystack wasn't on the summit of Haystack Mountain. The site was on the summit of Little Haystack Mountain. This structure was built during WWII by the Aircraft Warning Service, a spotters cabin. The big question for me is if it was used after the war for occasional fire finding? Documents from the AWS say the State of Washington wanted to retain the site after the war. USGS and Metsker Maps identify the location as having a "lookout" well into the 70's. If you know anything about this site, please contact me.
