Went out on Saturday and had a most excellent time with Eric E, and Greg K! We were the first ones to park at the Smith Brook road pullout. Snow telemetry said 4" of new snow. Forget it. It was more like 14-20 new with a hard crust layer below. We basically went up a tree lined area totally out of avalanche zone up to the ridge crest and over to peak 5550....I think this one is called Jelly peak with Peanut Butter peak more to the west. The snow was so soft! Not much moisture in it. Wonderful! On the way down we met some backcountry skiers....we don't see people in the backcountry often in the winter!
Peak 5550 / 470' prominence
5.5 hours round trip / 3200' of gain
Most pictures are from Greg K.

Very solid work under the conditions. I did Pt. 5576 one mile to the W through similar deep snow in Mar. 1997, but I don't know whether I could manage it today.
Here's the view from Pt. 5550 on Sept. 21, 2012. Views were terrible thanks to epic forest fires around Wenatchee, and the air was actually kind of unpleasant to breathe. Getting there was much easier than what you did. There is a partially abandoned but very usable trail that runs from Rainy Pass along the crest of Nason Ridge to the saddle 0.3 mi. SW of Pt. 5550. I think this ridge trail continues E to join the Snowy Creek/Rock Mtn. trail, but I didn't explore that far.

it did feel like floating on the way down. big, soft steps down on all that deep powder was especially nice, all descents should be that easy. greg put in a lot of work to repeat pk 5550
thanks for the trip, it was a really fun time in some good snow
