We went up to Camp Muir this last Sunday hoping to get a little sunshine and some big mountain scenery. When we arrived at Paradise, it was calm and warm with good visibility, but very grey and overcast.
Snow conditions down low were decent, but heading up to Pan Point things began to get a little icy. People with skis were carrying them and booting up the slope to Pan Point. From the top of Pan Point there was an icy crust with an inch or two or fresh snow on top.
There was quite the conga-line heading up the mountain, but it slowly began to dwindle as the wind picked up and the snow became harder and icier. By 8,000 ft. everything was heavily wind-affected and hard with scattered patches of rime ice.
Only a handful of people made it to Muir. Some skiers were carrying their skis down. By the time we pulled skins and were ready to ski down, the sun was poking through and it started to warm up a little.
We skied down about a thousand feet and transitioned over to the Paradise Glacier. The snow over on that side was much better. We continued down the Paradise Glacier briefly, and then traversed back across to the Pebble Creek drainage. By this point the snow was really softening up and it was starting to feel like springtime conditions.
We descended into the Pebble Creek drainage and down to the lower Nisqually Glacier. From there we followed the Nisqually drainage all the way to the bridge, where we had a second car parked.
Turned out to be a great day.
