Some years ago, road 23 at Babyshoe Pass washed out, well south of the current ones, and I think it was three years till it was fixed. A section of road 90 (Lewis River) has had some serious damage, though passable for many cars, for years. It seems that they simply do not have any reserve of funds for these impacts. Being remote I think adds a lot to the cost of getting them fixed.
All roads shouldn't have to be maintained to "county road" quality and they should be drive at your own risk.
BPJ just raised that point above. It's a non-starter. The federal lands management agencies are mandated to keep the roads up to a minimum standard, and they assume the responsibility for their visitors.
They're not going to adopt a "use at your own risk" policy on substandard roads.
