EDIT: this was apparently false information. The tree is still there.

We've lost a few iconic trees lately; this one, one on the Hoh trail, and the one sporting the old Snoqualmie N.F. Fortune Pass sign at Fortune Pass. And the sitka that was depicted in so many photos of the Oso mudslide.

We were just there and walked by onTuesday. It was completely hollowed out below canteliverd on either side. We wondered how long it would last.

That's not the memorial tree, is it?

I'm really sad to hear this, it was such a cool tree!

Apparently, this is not the iconic "tree of life" at Kalaloch. Please check sources - Washington Hikers & Climbers has posted a pic of the tree still standing from this afternoon. We were apparently all taken in by an accidental fake news story...

Well now that's embarrassing. I'm usually pretty good at catching false info online but I suppose I'm more trusting of info from my fellow hikers. My apologies! Good catch folks.

lol this had totally ruined my morning! I had kind thought there was something about that photo that was a bit off, I'm glad to hear that the tree still stands! I might have to plan a trip out there ASAP to see it again just in case....

Yes, the one in reststeps post is the one we remember, glad it is still there.
