Middle Fork is f###ed.
If you "pave it", ( improve it ) the idiots will follow
I've been back there a few times since the paving project.
Have encountered something like this every single time.
Bullet holes in the Middle Fork Trailhead sign
Disrespectful dog hikers and other rubbish
Giant fire pit right in the middle of the parking lot full of beer bottles and hundreds of nails. Obvious sign that cars are driving over it / parking on it.
So f###'n disrespectful
And some of you here want the forest service to reclaim abandoned trails.
Leave'em alone!!!!

Looks like a lot less garbage than the burned out cars and bullet ridden TVs that littered the MF in the 80s

Man, it's so disappointing and selfish when people do stuff like this.

I actually loved the abandoned cars. Gave the place some character.

I knew this would happen. Glad I hiked that area last year as much as I could before they paved...Hiking used to be so mysterious...now...ugh

I've ridden in a VW bus past Lipsy Lake to the Snoqualmie Lake/Nordrum Lake trailhead.
That was in the '60s, back when the Forest Service was talking about extending the Taylor River road over the ridge and down to Lake Dorothy and connection to the East Fork Miller.

Well, human nature is just that. They paved it SO THAT MORE PEOPLE WOULD GO THERE! Im sure more people are. There's no question many people avoided it in the past because of its reputation.

So!?
They took a slum, dramatically improved it with paved roads, nice interpretive signs, pretty bridges and any disrespect less than burned out cars and bullet ridden TVs is okay?
If it reverts back and with attitude like that, well...then...thats what we call, "putting lipstick on a pig" |
What was the level of gunshot noise? In the '80s the MF upstream from the concrete bridge was a shooting gallery on weekends with near constant sounds of gunfire. The crummy road meant almost zero patrols by law enforcement.
I'm hoping that the hordes of hikers enabled by the paved road (even the ones with mangy off-leash, barking and pooping dogs) will mean better enforcement of the target shooting ban
So while you were annoyed by the garbage left behind by some thoughtless jerks -- was it at least fairly quiet in the valley?

Is this really worse than it used to be? I mean this looks pretty typical to me, for any trailhead (paved or not). Bullet holes in the signs? Yep. Fires and beer cans at the trailhead? Pretty common. Dog poop bags? Don't get me started. At least it is in the bags (it is darn near impossible to walk up to Kendall Lakes in the Spring without stepping in dog poop). The only thing that is unusual is the nails -- I have no idea what that is about -- but that could have happened without the pavement.
So while it is a shame that people are idiots, I don't see this as evidence that things have actually gotten worse. The main reason they paved this, is to make it easier to drive there. You are really complaining about a separate issue, which is people being jerks, or maybe asking for more of a police presence in the area. The latter would be nice, but you could say that about lots and lots of trail heads. As for the former, the idiots didn't follow the pavement, they were always there.

Other than the 2 dirt bikes screaming past us on the road, yes. It was quiet. |
Sounds pretty good to me!!
Where I'm living now groups of a dozen or more dirt bike and ATVs riders will periodically buzz down one avenue for a couple of miles and then crossover to the adjacent avenue and buzz back up. Most of the time while the riders are doing this -- they are pulling a wheelie for many blocks and running red lights. No helmets or licence plates for that matter.
The police are too busy writing parking tickets for double parking to bother with the razzers.
What I can't figure out is where the heck do the razzers store those bikes (and ATVs!!) in an area were the half-life of a street parking space is measured in seconds and the monthly rent for parking space in a garage is over $600.

As warmer weather rolls around more folks will be up there enjoying the many splendors of the Middle Fork. That will also increase the amount good folks to report illegal activity when they see it which is a good thing.
