They paved paradise... Of course, my recollection was that paradise, at least in the vicinity of the road, equated to dumped vehicles and trash, illegal / elicit squatting, ATV and motorbike overuse, shooting, vandalism, and such.

They didn't pave paradise. They gated it.

Ya, I did that many times. The bastards at the FS gated the road because they didnt like the idea that you could breach the CENTER of the ALW are in a couple hours, when it took a day + all the other routes..... Buggers. down.gif

Im surprised that nobody (YET) has gotten a hold of a key to said gate and sold copies of it. Id surly have purchased one.

The last time I rode up that road (with a key holder driving) speed was about the same as riding a MTB. BTW caretaker positions with the Goldmyer non-profit are available http://www.goldmyer.org/caretaking.php

You changed your post! As far as I know to the end! There are quartz mine interests that (along with Goldmeyer) dictate the issues with the road. As far as I know they are responsible for road maintenance to the end. Frankly, the end isnt that far from a couple quartz mine parking lots.

What was the level of gunshot noise? In the '80s the MF upstream from the concrete bridge was a shooting gallery on weekends with near constant sounds of gunfire. The crummy road meant almost zero patrols by law enforcement. I'm hoping that the hordes of hikers enabled by the paved road (even the ones with mangy off-leash, barking and pooping dogs) will mean better enforcement of the target shooting ban So while you were annoyed by the garbage left behind by some thoughtless jerks -- was it at least fairly quiet in the valley?
Bear in mind that HUNTING with firearms is still allowed up there.

The Alpine Lakes region should have been made into a National Park long ago IMHO.
Washington has enough national parks. The Alpine Lakes offers opportunities for early high country deer hunting, grouse and small game hunting opportunities. It has been this way for decades, even before the place was made a wilderness.

IME, The noise impact of hunting is 100x less than that of plinking / target shooting. Hunters know that sound of gunfire can spook their quarry -- so for the most part hunters try to make every round count.
