This is just a quick and dirty report live from the scene. New snow failed to materialize over the night or this morning. Visibility is good but slightly overcast. Moderate wind. Snow conditions bad; unsupportive surface crust. Last week's perfect ski/snowshoe track has been obliterated by postholes. Would not advise coming here today!

Thanks! This is the type of info that actually helps with planning- what this community is [or should be] about.

Yes, thanks. I'm not shocked based on the snow conditions I saw on top of Si yesterday (would have preferred a ski climb for a workout/outing but wasn't optimistic so opted for a shorter drive to a hike to mourn the passing of our latest powder cycle) - deep soft manky snow as expected. I would guess one needs to go a fair bit higher than 4K in the central Cascades right now to find better snow, with much avalanche hazard to consider en route...

Well, I attempted to ski it but it was incredibly difficult. Not wanting to blow a knee with spring corn just over the horizon, I opted to carry my skis most of the way down. Still not snowing. Went and checked the forecast again to make sure I'm not crazy. 100% chance of snow today -- up to 8 inches. confused.gif

I see that, 4 to 8 above 4800, 2 to 4 above 3800. Why am I skeptical?

Yeah, NWS point forecast at 4879 above the pass is calling for 4-8" today, which may yet come? NWAC forecasts calls for "increasing moderate snow and rain" so the trend is presumably toward more later But NWS is also calling for a high of 36 at that elevation. After much knee strain on warmer recent ski days, that's not sounding like a forecast I want to hop on.

OTOH if you know of a typically hard Styrofoam-snow wind hammered ridge that would make a nice ski line if not for the typically crappy snow, it might go well now, as that snow softens a bit yet stays supportable! peace.gif

It just starting raining steadily in Woodinville. I'd guess that Stevens will not be far behind. Does not look super appetizing on the DOT cams right now at either pass, though it looks like maybe something snow-like (a "wintry mix" perhaps?) has started in up at Stevens just now.

And from the Summit at Snoqualmie snow report, updated 12:10 PM
Quote:
Snow conditions today are somewhat firm, but the surface snow is wet so it's soft in places. The best turns today will be had on the main runs and groomers. Edelweiss Chair Notice: Due to very challenging conditions on upper mountain, Edelweiss Chair will remain closed for the day.
It is snowing and "starting to accumulate" at Snoqualmie, also noted in the report. No line on Silver Fir chair and big snowflakes falling, per webcam

Great conditions updates. Thank you! I was up at Wallace yesterday (the 11th) and it was a soupy mess up near Jay Lake.

I saw clear skies on the WSDOT webcams and took off for Smith Brook that same day. Same rotten conditions as you had on Heather Ridge. I turned back at the last switchback. The whole area has avalanched. I kept my skins the whole day. There were 7 Mountaineers snowshoeing to Valhalla. Not sure they made it, at about an hour/mile it was slow going for sure.
