Normally I wouldn't clutter this site with a Wallace Falls TR, but I was curious why a very expensive bridge over the Wallace River, upstream from the Upper Falls, was installed, most certainly by helicopter.

After crossing the bridge, you enter into DNR property.

The views from the bridge are very nice, but it is mystifying why it was put there. Anyone know the back story on this?

I believe the bridge will connect to the new Reiter trails. The old Footsore 2 book describes some of the old roads. I went a short way beyond the bridge but plan to explore more soon. This was the bridge in December 2014:
It has been done for well over a year.

That was the mainline logging road up from Reiter pit in the past. Back in the 70's you could easily drive any vehicle up to the east end of that bridge. I'm not sure when the earlier bridge was removed - perhaps in the early 60's. Here's how we crossed it back then

we used to wade across that area of the river carrying mtn bikes back in the late 80's, to connect from one side of the trail system to the other. Eventually there was a really bad washout with a deep ravine on the Reiter side that you had to watch for carefully when zooming down on a mtn bike, doing the loop.

Thanks for the great stories! My old Footsore2 book says that after you cross into DNR property the road/trail leads to what Harvey Manning calls "Wallace Vista" with some nice views before it drops down to the valley.

Thank you Mr. Slugman. If your name didn't have the word "Slug" in it I might actually like you. tongue.gif

I hate slugs myself, it was my revulsion for them that originally earned me that nickname in the early 90's. It stuck because I was also very slow. I learned to embrace the name rather than fight it.
