Sunshine and no snow--looks enticing!
I've poked around over there a little bit. I wasn't even thinking about ticks, but it's rattler country too I believe. Ankle to knee high grass or brush in rattler territory weighs on the back of my mind.
Nice critter sightings. Any idea what happened to that heron?

Desert and canyon hikes are where it's at in late winter and the spring. I'll definitely file this one for future reference.

Awesome! This has been on my list for awhile... with the way the weather's been behaving lately I might have to bump it up a few spots.
Just wish the drive weren't so long. How long did it take you to drive from Seattle? How long were you gone total, including drive time?
p.s. The R is adorable! Bet she loved it.

Love all the wildlife sightings! This is a great location with the ongoing crappy weather. Maybe I even need to consider heading more east than usual ...

I don't think so (sorry, had to put that in for effect.)
I think it was killed. Raccoons will eat the crop in the neck and leave the rest, looks like possibly a raccoon kill to me.

A raccoon can take down a heron? That's a lot of bird to handle. Interesting.

I was going to say that Freezeout Saddle on the Oregon side should be open soon and is a much shorter drive, but it probably isn't shorter coming from Seattle. For me (Columbia River Gorge area) it is a lot shorter. It also isn't so flat , since you go over the saddle and then down the other side, to the river if you want. The Columbia is near flood stage here and the Grand Ronde is in flood stage so I'm guessing so is the Snake, since snowmelt in BC, Idaho, eastern WA is the stated reason on local news for these high water levels. So need to give it a chance to go down.
