The link is a 3 1/2 minute excerpt from a Long Now Foundation lecture by Steven Johnson about human's historical relationship with nature. The full lecture and others in the series are available at longnow.org/ as a podcast. The gist: "People were offended visually by things like mountains. ... People were appalled at these monstrous forms on the horizon. When they would be carried by coach by the Alps they would have to be blindfolded so that they didn't have to see these horrible creatures looming"
