While the Boy Scouts were discriminatory, I think in most cases discrimination is not the right word. Parks (like national parks) and organizations (like WTA) create infrastructure or programs based on what people want. So maybe some people (or groups of people) aren't using facilities or services because they don't provide what the potential user wants. As long as changes to those facilities or services don't undermine the underlying mission, it's completely appropriate to find out what people want and try to provide that. This is especially true for government facilities, which should attempt to serve all people, but it applies to organizations too.

Have you ever looked at an REI catalog? White male dominated hetro-normative in spades.

Yeah, and the store is over half women's clothes. And how can you tell the sexual orientation of a catalogue model? I think Randy is just trolling (as is his wont).

I agree that more recently they have been marketing to thin white hetro women.

As others have pointed out, this really isn't true. But even if it was, so what? Do white males not make up the majority of the hiking community, followed closely behind by white females? How are ads which reflect this reality a bad thing? Is it not good marketing sense to target your chief demographic?

I believe that there are a lot more non-hetro normative hikers out there than you recognise. A big factor for the LGBTQ community is safety. Hiking and backpacking places one in vunerable circumstances, where the social norm is heavily hetro-normative. Just look at some of the clueless responses in this thread. Outside of major metropolises, LGBTQ folks keep a low profile to avoid becoming a target for assault.

Well since gays only make up roughly 2% of the population I really doubt it's that many. Certainly not enough to focus a marketing campaign on.
Can you cite a single instance of an LGBT person being attacked on a hiking trail?

I believe it's closer to 4%. And if you don't care then why revive this thread?

I believe this is called niggling.

I was referring to not caring about public displays of affection. I do care quite a lot about how identity politics are being pushed into the hiking community.
