The wireless routers before the N & AC standard only used the 2.4 Megahertz band. There are a lot of other transmitters in that range (blue tooth, cordless phones, microwave ovens, etc) so it's a bit crowed. You can change channel numbers in your router set up to see if you could find a slightly better signal.
The newer wireless N and AC standards also transmit on the 5 MHz range as well. This band tends to have much more reliable communications in most areas.
If your going to upgrade your router, please consider updating your cable modem at the same time. A older modem can really throttle your performance. I would recommend a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, any of the current Motorola Surf-Boards models would be a really solid performer.
I would definitely get a dual-band megabit AC router, you may not need all the performance now, but it will remain technology useful longer.
The cable internet service is fairly expensive, using equipment that can't make full use of it is not very cost effective.
