This happened in Richmond, B.C. yesterday on Sunday, May 21 (I believe). Here's an article on CTV's website. It is rather shocking. She was rescued by her grandfather. I wonder what the sea lion's intent was--play, mischief-making or what? ~z

Sea Lions are opportunistic feeders and aren't really picky eaters. I would imagine little girl would be a tasty snack. At a meeting one night years ago down in Longview (Trout Unlimited?) I listened to a couple guys tell stories about fishing from boats down on the Cowlitz, both of whom almost had their hands removed by Sea Lions when attempting to pull salmon up over the gunwales on their boats. Fish, hands, little girls .... it's all food.

Pretty crazy video, saw that last night. I took it more like the sea lion was annoyed that the feeding stopped rather than actually trying to eat the girl. What is the biggest prey they take on normally? I wouldn't think anything that size.

Ski, I certainly don't want to argue with you. But I have never heard of sea lion predation on humans. ... Well, it turns out that it can happen under certain conditions. I tried a general search, but the Wikipedia article on Sea Lions (scroll down toward the bottom) has a section on Sea Lions and Humans. Quote: Sea lion attacks on humans are rare, but when humans come within approximately 2.5 meters, it can be very unsafe. More in the section on this and other examples including yesterday's event. I know that I felt rather vulnerable a few years ago as I paddle boarded back toward Duwamish Head from Alki Point. I was probably a couple hundred yards from the beach and some sea lions started feeding on salmon--lots of splashing, enormous heaving bodies, churning water, bits of fish, screaming gulls and commotion. eek.gif Whoa. Let me out of here. ~z Edit: And here's an article about a sea lion attack on a San Diego fisherman. He was yanked overboard while posing for a photo with his catch.

Well...... as I said above, I was attending some fish deal.... some open house or presentation or something... as I recall it was a Trout Unlimited deal... would have been about 1992-1993... down in Longview. I think it's a given that fishermen as a lot are story-tellers, but the first-hand narratives that were related didn't really sound grossly exaggerated... both of those guys said they thought they almost lost their right hands. There would have been nothing to gain there by making something like that up. Sea Lions have really sharp teeth. I wouldn't trust one as far as I could throw it. (But then, bear in mind I'm a card-carrying Sea Lion hater.)

A marmot could probably bite your finger off. Sea lions get BIG, you obviously have to use caution any time you are in proximity to a large animal. You can find some accounts of sea lions attacking people, but predation is another matter entirely.

The skull of a mature sea lion and the skull of a mature GRIZZ are similar. Just sayin'. Ya know how humans get grumpy, wake up on the wrong side of the bed, have a toothache, or get hangry? Why not a sea lion? Hopefully lesson learned for all involved. Tom

Relived the young girl appears to be OK. Health officials can't locate family to see if she was bitten as sea lions have a lot of nasty bacteria in their mouth. Having said that I understand there was notification not to feed the sea lions next to the docks and nature took its' course.

They're big, they have a BIG mouth full of teeth, they're constantly yelling and bickering with one another, and many have very obviously sea-lion-mouth-sized/shaped scars on their bodies. Love watching them but I'd sure as heck rather have some distance between them and me.

Anyone who doesn't comprehend - and respect - the W-I-L-D in wild animal is going to run into trouble eventually.

Dogs harassing them have been known to get dunked and drowned. Same goes for beaver.

Absolutely correct. Both animals have a very pronounced sagittal crest rising well about the cranial vault. This allows for a large surface area for the masseter muscles to attach to providing it with an incredible bite. I was once snorkeling next to a male sea lion's harem in the Gulf of California. The male swam by me and opened his mouth to show me his enormous teeth. There is a good reason they are called sea lions. Here is the actual skull.
