Last time I was up there was about three months ago and there was a massive washout after the Sunday Creek bridge but before the turn off toward Bare Mountain. Not sure if they've closed the road there or not but it was a spooky drive sneaking past the washout, which is happening at a river bend and slumping part of the roadway down and away. I also hear that up on the Bare Mountain sideroad there's still some kind of washout but I haven't been up that far in a awhile.
Yeah that must be to address the giant slump/washout. When I was there you could drive past it, but my river-side wheels were almost to the crumbly edge of the sand - and I've got a relatively small crossover. Wouldn't recommend it in a big truck if for no other reason than to not widen the road or make the slump worse.
There were ROAD CLOSED signs on both sides of the slide for a bit ( 2 weeks ago). Then the signs vanished. I suspect stolen or thrown into the bushes. Folks are driving around the slide. It's pretty sketchy. I don't recommend risking it. If that thing goes while you're skirting it you're in for a few rolls and maybe a dunking.
It's a short walk to Sunday Cr bridge after the slide.
