I know someone on here has used this umbrella. What is your experience with trekking umbrellas ?

At 13 oz, it's a little on the heavy side. I found a similar looking, 7 oz travel umbrella at Value Village for $5. Works fine hands free for the most part- sometimes have to move it around a little to get through brushy spots. Once you try an umbrella on the trail, there's no going back. So much more pleasant to walk in the rain without having water running down your face, neck etc. Hoods make me overheat after a short distance, especially on an uphill. There's usually a pretty good selection of lightweight umbrellas at VV and other thrift shops...

If you google hiking umbrella you will get a lot of choices. Some are less than half that weight.

The Chrome Dome is the most popular model with the light weight backpacking crowd at 8 ounces. http://gossamergear.com/chrome-umbrella.html

I ordered the 7 oz. Lite version. I think this company supplied some U.S. company's with their umbrellas and allowed them to use their own logo on them, Golite was at least one of them looks like Gossamer Gear and Zpacks could be others.

Lite flex is where it's at. Chrome dome and others are the same thing by the same manufacturer as Lite flex.

I have the full size one (http://www.euroschirm.com/schirm/Swing_handsfree/index.cgi?sprache_land=usa) and one of the smaller (non-telescoping) ones, and it provides significantly more coverage. It's got a nice attachment system that has worked well for the four or so years I've had it. The stitching around the edge of the smaller one has come undone, so the edge is fraying. I don't care about the additional weight of the full-size one at all, I care about not being soaking wet. I'd recommend getting the silver one for the sun protection is gives.

I purchased one (Euroshirm trekking) a few months ago and will be trying it later this month in the ONP. I will report back.

I should have taken and used mine yesterday as we tried to make it up to Colonel Bob. However, I really enjoyed the 80 degree weather and so much sun. I don't mind a sunburn once and a while!

So do you carry it in your hand or mount it some way? FWIW we have the Chrome Domes and hand carry them but would prefer hands-free.

It is designed for hands free. The shaft extends and attaches to the belt. The upper part of the shaft attaches to a shoulder strap. I have not actually used mine yet but I use a full size umbrella much of the year for covering my camera gear and that is essentially how I use it so this smaller trekking umbrella will work fine. My camera equipment umbrella is just too big for hiking so this Euroshirm will be about perfect. I purchased at Campmor. http://www.euroschirm.com/trekking.php?session=xXfrolHCJ0RqA&sprache_land=usa

Zpacks, Golite, and MLD UL Chrome Dome umbrellas are manufactured by this company. The original link I posted shows an attachment system you can make to attach it to your pack.
