Clever marketing to a niche group ...Fuji Heavy Industry does social work! I think this is pretty cool given Japan's reputation as very socially conservative. I had no idea the marketing was intentional
Quote:
In the 1990s, Subaru’s unique selling point was that the company increasingly made all-wheel drive standard on all its cars. When the company’s marketers went searching for people willing to pay a premium for all-wheel drive, they identified four core groups who were responsible for half of the company’s American sales: teachers and educators, health-care professionals, IT professionals, and outdoorsy types. Then they discovered a fifth: lesbians. “When we did the research, we found pockets of the country like Northampton, Massachusetts, and Portland, Oregon, where the head of the household would be a single person—and often a woman,” says Tim Bennett, who was the company’s director of advertising at the time. When marketers talked to these customers, they realized these women buying Subarus were lesbian.

Most corporations don't care who you are, as long as they can make money off you.

Well that's kinda the point, isn't it? Make money by trading you something you agree you want. What I thought was interesting is their deft targeting of a burgeoning subculture which isn't usually on the radar of conservative japanese heavy industry

That was an interesting article. And also targeting School Teachers, IT Professionals, and Outdoorsy types. I fall into two of those categories and I own a Subaru so I guess they know what they're doing or maybe I'm just a sucker. ~Slim

Actually, the more they know you, the more they can make off of you. Customer identification is absolutely critical for any corporation.

^ Really enjoyed hearing the news broadcast a week or so back about marketing firms literally tracking consumers' whereabouts by the GPS signals emanating from their smart phones and then broadcasting to them announcements about special deals at retailers they had just visited or were in their immediate proximity. Suckersssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol.gif

I wish those bastards would import their boxer diesel (Subaru Outback) to the US.

Two things: 1) Fuel prices in the US are so low compared to yurp and Japan, so the US market for super high mileage diesels is pretty small. 2) The EPA regulations that VW violated are unique to the US. In fact the NOX regulations seem almost taylor made to exclude the small high efficiency diesels made by VW, Subaru, Toyota, etc for other markets. Yurp and Japan has much greater population density, yet their environmental protection agencies see fit to permit them. I wonder whether these regulations are really intended to protect public health or are they there to protect sales of gasoline?

There isn't just a problem of failing to look at the other elevation drawings, or to consider intent. There is a fault in this one as it stands. Where's the railing on the landing?

That is what happens when you have Escher draw up your plans. I actually had a case like this where the homeowner drew up his own plans including a two foot step in the roofline wher the pen slipped or something. The builder built it without asking and the roof included the step. doh.gif
