We hiked to the Navaho Pass yesterday hoping for some clear skies in a cloudy weekend. It didn't clear up until our return trip, so no Enchantments views from the pass, but we still had a fun day with the kids.
Some notes on conditions etc:
- The trail is virtually snow-free to the pass. We didn't go to the peak (no time and no views), but we did talk with a party who tried to go up and wasn't comfortable on the last section without poles.
- Nice flower show: many glacier lilies, anemones, and at lower elevation paintbrush and lupine is out. Tiger lilies are about to open just at the trailhead. We saw the nicest fields of shooting stars I've ever seen, but didn't have time to get nice photos of those.
- The trailhead parking area was full, turned out to be mostly backpackers who were hiking out on Sunday. It was easy to park on the road though. I didn't realize it's such a popular backpacking spot, but there are some nice camping spots in the meadows that did look good for doing various peaks. We only ran into a handful of day hikers.
- We saw signs of recent trail maintenance, and generally the trail is in a good state.
With cloudy skies and no views I didn't take too many photos, but here are some flowers and kids having fun, which people always seem to enjoy . All photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/bravenboer/sets/72157683220155590
Motivational sign at the trailhead: 'easiest'. Compare this to the Kendall Katwalk, which is rated 'most difficult'.
Tiger Lilies are getting close at the beginning of the trail
Great kid pics!
There was a WTA crew there this weekend, hence the fresh trailwork and, presumably, the extra amount of vehicles in the parking lot. For folks who were climbing over logs on the way to the pass a week+ ago, they're all gone now.
Bummer you didn't have better views on Sunday. I did the peak on Saturday and it was quite nice, though Rainier and Adams went into hiding while we were on the summit.
