Fletcher, Chandler and I hiked up Silver Tip Peak 6140' today from the Monte Cristo town-site. We used a rope for the class 4 ending, which Fletcher led. I think we could have done it without the rope on the way up, but it is considerably exposed for the very last move. We were glad to be able to rappel on the way down. The lake is still frozen over.

Nice. up.gif I love that area. Have you guys hit Columbia yet? That's a pretty interesting climb, and a really cool approach via the trail to Twiin Lakes.

Fairly target rich environment. I can't remember seeing a TR for an enchainment or grand traverse, but I think if someone was ambitious there are interesting possibilities there. There aren't any truly iconic Cascade peaks in the region, and not among the highest (several 7000'+ and more 6000'+), but there are some striking looking mountains that are worthy climbing objectives. Reasonably short approaches for the most part too. edited--I'm not including Sloan Peak among the Monte Cristo group, that one I would consider somewhat iconic

What a great climb! That is a scenic area with such a rich history. There are four mines high on the side of Silvertip, one of which is rated "inaccessible". Imagine how those crazy miners made their way up and down the mountain!

Yeah! Columbia is awesome. Did that years ago with Matt. I liked it so much that I recommended it for Fletcher and we were both telling Chandler that he should consider doing it. Definitely one of my favorites on the MLH.

Eric, I think you will like this area. There are plenty of craggy peaks and a number I haven't tried yet like Foggy and Gemini.

Thanks Nancy. I didn't see any mines on the peak, but I have read about the history and I believe there was a large mill somewhere in the vicinity of the lake. I have seen precarious adits before however, which leave you scratching your head about how the heck they got up on the side of a cliff.
