So if perchance you hear one out there, and it's obvious it's focused on you, motion for it to come closer. When it comes in, give the operator the middle finger. Toss a few rocks for good measure.

Huh? Thought the max elevation was 400 feet (above surrounding topography.)
For commercial operators - yes, not for hobbyists. Hobbyists are currently exempt from the 400 ft rule.

Drone flights over wilderness are already effectively illegal.
Quote:
The FAA provides guidance (link is external) on “Flights Over Charted U.S. Wildlife Refuges, Parks, and Forest Service Areas”. Per this guidance, federal laws prohibit certain types of flight activity and/or provide altitude restrictions over “designated Forest Service Areas.” UAS are considered to be "mechanized” equipment and cannot take off and land in designated Wilderness Areas on National Forest System lands.
So to fly over a wilderness area, you would have to launch outside the wilderness boundary and also comply with the current FAA UAS rules that require the drone to be visible to the operator.

Can you shoot it with a gun, bury it in a cairn, and put your doggie doo baggie on top of it? Then mark it with a GPS waypoint and post it on line?

Since when did this happen? Everything I've read has said it must always be within eyesight and no more than 400 feet above the ground. It would make more sense that commercial operators are the ones exempt from this restriction, because they're the ones that have to go through the permitting process. Hobbyists don't have to register with the FAA anymore.

Cool video. Maybe drones can be used to lift poodle poop from the Mt Si trail.

^ unfortunately those are not only heavy and cumbersome, but most of them are either in experimental stages or available only to military or law enforcement. Mossberg 500 or 550 is probably the best option available to the average consumer, although it would add considerably to pack weight. there's always the possibility of having your own trained sheep tag along with you. I'm thinking Ted Williams on full choke could nail one.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

400 ft is a "guideline" not the actual law. At the moment as far as I know, the law does NOT specify a concrete elevation. However, many other rules, state and local, etc, ( and making sure you're not in the way ) will come in to play. Too much to go over here, but the drone forums are full of the explanations. The drone rules are going to be changed. https://www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/fly_for_fun/ Flying under the Special Rule for Model Aircraft The Special Rule for Model Aircraft (P.L. 112-95, Section 336) (PDF) provides the definition and operating rules for flying a model aircraft. Note: Model aircraft operators that comply with all of these operational requirements during flight do not have to register their UAS with the FAA. Model aircraft operators must follow these rules to fly under this Rule: •the aircraft is flown strictly for hobby or recreational use •the aircraft is operated in accordance with a community-based set of safety guidelines and within the programming of a nationwide community-based organization •the aircraft is limited to not more than 55 pounds unless otherwise certified through a design, construction, inspection, flight test, and operational safety program administered by a community-based organization •the aircraft is operated in a manner that does not interfere with and gives way to any manned aircraft •when flown within 5 miles of an airport, the operator of the aircraft provides the airport operator and the airport air traffic control tower (when an air traffic facility is located at the airport) with prior notice of the operation (model aircraft operators flying from a permanent location within 5 miles of an airport should establish a mutually-agreed upon operating procedure with the airport operator and the airport air traffic control tower [when an air traffic facility is located at the airport])
