I hike with a whippet. Sturdier than a trekking poll, it can used for self-arrest, it's great for picking things up and hooking branches/rocks on steep hikes, and it can be used in the cane position (my preference). Even if you don't ski, I recommend a whippet.

Whippets are great for self arrest, on snow, steep Heather and pine needles. However as trekking pole they are quite a bit heavier than regular trekking poles. The Black Diamond Z-Fold poles weigh about half and fold up small for easy carrying and keeping unassisted balance skills sharp. Z-fold type poles are often used by trail runners / fast-packers.
