I am currently in North Idaho, how is the berry situation in WWA? They had a pretty much near "Bumper Crop" over here near Priest Lake at least in the lower elevation. The lower crop is pretty much done, just picked a few at a higher elevation 3k...and they were a bit sparse but not terrible. The thickest patch of HUGE berries I have found were near Twisp pass 3 years ago, the entire mountainside was literally covered with them! Hiking was slow, but the huckleberry pancakes were awesome in the morning!

Himalayan blackberries are just starting to come in strong here in the San Juans. The thimbleberry patch (a personal favorite) has just about finished up, after a strong run. I'm hoping that means they are still ripening in at higher elevation.

I was up at Mount Baker ( Schribners Meadows) doing a WTA work party. There are scattered bushes of huckleberries blooming but it is an off year so far. Nowhere near the normal bumper crop that is to be found there. A friend tells me that the berries in the central Cascades are still small and green, perhaps as a result of our continued dry weather? shakehead.gif

Unfortunately that's what I expected to hear Bob....they had a bumper crop down low here in N Idaho due to a very wet spring, but the summer has been just as hot and dry over here, so the higher elevation crop is similar to what you described, maybe a bit better. I was able to pick enough to make a couple of Huckleberry Daquires. souse.gif

I was on Mt. Spokane today and in 3 hours I got all that I needed to make several batches of my jam. Picked them at just over 4,000 outside the nordic ski parking area. I have never picked the lowland ones around here, but I probably should. When I lived on the westside I picked the red huckleberries and that was time consuming! They can be prolific but the berries themselves are small. Here I can find some bushes where they are almost the size of grapes. That picture from Twisp Pass is impressive.

Great! New brew pub just opened up to go with the one we already had. Added bonus my neighbor brews his own too. biggrin.gif

Or maybe it is because it is early August. Give it a few weeks.

Just an FYI--We found an impressive amount of ripe blueberries on the Black and White Way Trail heading up to Black and White Lakes in the Olympics(Off the North Fork of the Skokomish River Trail). The last mile was lined with them and the area surrounding the lake was full of blueberries, as well. It almost made up for the incredibly difficult climb up that trail!

Come October Picture Lake at Baker should have a good crop. Other than that it's been kind of dry don't you think? Or maybe berry patches got burned over.

I picked about 5 quarts Friday on West Cady, but it took me almost 5 hours. Not a great year. Too hot and too dry. Mark

Bushes were full and ripe at about 4500 near east of Baker this weekend.

Sounds like Baker is early then.
