Took a trip to Rock Lake in the ALW. One of my favorite lakes. Hike is short but straight up hill as you take a fishermans trail to the lake.

Nice trip. I had to look up where that particular Rock Lake was. It seems like a big fire like that could get out of hand easily at the end of a long dry spell.

Nice trip (other than the campfire).

Looks like a fun trip. BTW, removed a few heated replies regarding campfires as they were running afoul of our TR comment policy.

Nice job outing a sekrit location (there's kinda this unspoken rule about no naming sekrit locations). Just a reminder, fires are not allowed over 4,000' in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness (west of the crest).

Thanks! It was a month ago and the lake was freezing. I really try to swim in them all.... tradition for me I guess.

Do you know if any of the German Brown trout planted in that lake remain?

This is Hike No. 7 in Spring and Manning's book "100 Hikes in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness."

That is put on the list for next year. I usually give the people I go with a list and let them choose. Hoping to make it out there when I have a little more time to make the drive.

I have been up there twice. Once in 2014 and this last trip. My trip in 2014 there were zero fish. We fished for hours with no success and didn't see evidence of anything. With that said there were thunderstorms so maybe that caused some issues. This trip there were a number of fish but nothing larger than 8"-10". When I see cutthroat, rainbow, or goldens I know what Im looking at. My assumption was they were some sort of brook trout as I thought I remember seeing information stating those were in the lake. Not sure if they were German Brown Trout but they were small. Seemed like they may have been planted maybe last year or they just don't get to big.

I guess with google earth/the internet "sekrits" are not really sekrit anymore. Maybe it was true pre-internet. Even if people see a video or internet post its one thing to know where it is, its a completely different thing to actually find it. I have been to a number of sekrits and they are damn hard to get to. You can have GPS, a map, instructions and still not find it.

My copy of the book is from 1985, and it tells you exactly how to get to Rock Lake. So this pretty well fits the definition of "not sekrit." I will PM the route description if someone wants it.

Lets not talk about the Illegal stocking of the German Browns in lakes. Browns haven't been stocked in there since 94. EB or BT are usually caught in there these days. I fished the krap out of Rock lake in my Alpacka raft.
