Announcement for Aug 29, 2017 11:30 AM
Due to heightened activity of the Norse Peak Fire, the Pacific Crest Trail has now been closed from White Pass north to Government Meadow. Government Meadow is near the northern boundary of the Norse Peak Wilderness Area.
Road 1902 from the Forest Road 19, along the Little Naches River, to "Raven's Roost" is also closed.
The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest is updating and expanding its closure area.
Thank you for respecting this closure in order to support public and firefighter safety.
We will post more information as soon as we know. |

I am assuming that is the White Pass to the north and not the White Pass on highway 12.

Good grief! I guess we might get some huckleberry habitat out of it.

That doesn't make any sense.
What's on fire south of Hwy 410 in the William O Douglas Wilderness?
Maybe they made a mistake and meant to say its closed between Chinook Pass and Meadows.gov ? |

Perhaps as the SR 410 crossing is a minor one compared with the other roadways (no services) they decided to cut hikers off before they got to Chinook. But it's real.

There were eight or ten through hikers at The Mountain Goat cafe in Packwood this morn. Is it near the top of the bell curve?

Closing at White Pass makes perfect sense actually, when you think about the logistics for many of the hikers.
First off, there is in fact some fire on the south side of 410. See the above linked inciweb.
Second, a large fraction of the users of the PCT in that area this time of year are thru hikers.
If the south side of the closure were at Chinook Pass, where would they go? There's nothing there.
410 is closed to the east. Traffic only can go west.
How much traffic is there? Not a lot mid week.
What services are there? None.
White Pass has a large volume of traffic and services that can sustain people until such time as they arrange transportation out. There is the little condo / hotel and the store.
PCTA has already been contacted about southbounders stuck at Government Meadows. Their only option is to walk / hitch down the 70 Road to 410. |

The American Fire is south of 410. It was two lightning strikes that burned together. Looked like the Norse Fire had the mushroom cloud of money yesterday from what the satellite picture showed.
The area could use a bit of burning, but preferably not a hot megafire.
Highway 410 has been opening at night when falling operations are not going. As of yesterday, it was scheduled to be opened tomorrow.
I decided to go to town instead of going hiking. What with the highway closure and road repairs, going east of Packwood is not very fun. I need to pick up supplies to hole up fer the weekend. It is flea market horror time in two days.

Here to the west it was pretty bad yesterday. Tongue Mtn. was barely visible and Mt Adams was not to be seen from the Randle spot. It was a day of rawish throat here.
