The Florida Keys are under Mandatory Evacuation order starting tomorrow. Here's a CBS article. (Note: there is an auto-play video you might want to stop.) Quote: MARATHON (CBSMiami) – Evacuation orders are being given in the Florida Keys as Monroe County emergency managers prepare for Hurricane Irma. “For the Florida Keys, if you were to create the worst case scenario that is what we are looking at,” said Monroe Co. Emergency Operations Center Director Martin Senterfitt. The grim outlook prompted Senterfitt to order mandatory evacuations. “We’re emphatically telling people you must evacuate, you can not afford to stay on an island with a Category 5 hurricane coming at you. Most of this island chain is only three to five feet above sea level. With the surges we’re expecting this is not the place to be,” said Senterfitt. A visitor evacuation expected to begin at sunrise on Wednesday. An evacuation for residents also will be issued. The time has yet to be determined. There will be no shelters in Monroe County. If this is of interest, here's the tracker that you might want to bookmark and track the storm's progress these next few days. I have family near Daytona Beach, so I will be watching this one play out. Sure is a lot going on these days. frown.gif ~z

Here's an interesting gif from NASA via their Twitter account. It's a satellite image of the eye of the hurricane as the afternoon sun casts a deep shadow across the eye. The walls of the eye are said to be 5 to 5.6 miles high. Pretty interesting sight. There are two gifs, one zoomed in close and the other further back. ~z

Here are a couple Google + GIS maps I produced. Each can display 20+ GIS overlay layers. Florida evacuation map. https://mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.php?ll=28.417975,-81.953887&z=7&t=m,Google_traffic,State_hwy_closed&q=https://propertylinemaps.com/p/public_land_map/state/FL/FL_evacuation.txt Hurricane map Many of the GIS layers this map can display come from a server operated by NOAA's nowCOAST team. Unfortunately they have been having major problems. So this map map or may not work. https://mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.php?ll=32.392011,-77.912486&z=4&t=Today_satellite_view,State_boundary,Hurricane_observed_track,Hurricane_track_forecast,Hurricane_center_forecast,Chance_hurricane_forms&q=https://propertylinemaps.com/p/public_land_map/USA/USA_NOAA_hurricane.txt

Gulfstream is talking about being shut down for three days and so far the path is unknown. Last year they had an evacuation but it turned out to be just strong winds as the hurricane was further off shore. This time may be worse. I've decided to make a mini vacation out of it and booked a hotel in Asheville, NC. It's right between three national forests with a few "mountains" to hike and a bunch of craft breweries in the area. Folks here say it is a quite scenic area, though still too early for full fall colors.

Despair is only for those who see the end beyond all doubt.

The closer Irma gets, the more it looks like it'll go up one side of Florida or the other. It appears to be nudged northwards slightly. I only hope that people evacuate and are safe. cool.gif

Here is another map you can play with. The theme of this one is storm surge. There are other surge overlays you can turn on that show possible water depth. Be patient. The GIS servers that are hosting this data are getting slammed with data requests. You will need to click "Map Tips" and then the "Legend" button to really understand the colors. https://mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.php?usng=17R_NJ_7671_5696&tilt=off&z=11&t=h,Storm_surge_zone&coord=usng&q=https://propertylinemaps.com/p/public_land_map/state/FL/FL_hurricane.txt

Thanks, Joey. In other storm-related news, a few flights tried to get into San Juan, Puerto Rico ahead of Irma. Some turned back. Delta 431 made it and then managed to get back up in the air and return to New York. Must have been pretty exciting for the passengers either direction. You can follow the story on these Twitter posts. Below is Google + GIS map link that will always display a color satellite image for the *current day*. Each day this imagery is captured by one of the MODIS satellites. This image shows Irma and an outline for the states. This images builds from east to west throughout each day as the satellite makes repeated passes. If the image is black when you look at it then that simply means the satellite has not covered Florida yet. There also is a delay of a few hours while the raw imagery is processed and then posted to the NASA GIS server. If you see a black background then pan the map towards Africa and Europe and you will see what part of the imagery is so far available for the current day. Map link: https://bit.ly/2xQbCem

Thanks, Joey. That updating satellite map is very cool. I sent the earlier map of the Florida evacuation routes (see up thread) to family in Ormond Beach and to friends in Miami. Both really liked the map and thought it very handy. So this is interesting. Here's that wind map we see on here sometimes. It's focused on Florida, the Southeast and the Gulf/Caribbean Sea. The two storms amidst the wind flows is very mesmerizing. If you move a bit west you can also see Katia in the Gulf. To be honest, I don't know if it's that accurate or of any practical use. More info on it here. ~z

This black and white satellite basemap updates about every 30 minutes. At night this basemap is black.

The island of Anguilla is small and low-lying. Per Wikipedia: It is one of the most northerly of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles, lying east of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and directly north of Saint Martin. Hurricane Irma struck yesterday (Sep 7) and this video is purported to be taken from there. I looked up the topography and the elevations appear to 100' or less above sea level. I could see where this could be a little disconcerting. eek.gif ~z
Additional note on the video: Footage provided by a resident of the tiny British territory, courtesy Rupert Jones, the former attorney general of Anguilla.

I came across a new map last night. It appears to be new--from the Google Crisis Center. I don't recall seeing one of these before. It does take a little while to load. Shows current location and probable path of the storm. Not sure what the sources are but it seems to coincide with other storm locators. ~z

Interesting visual of high wind and surge through high rises in Miami. It's Twitter post by a BBC reporter. The original is from Univision he says. You have to turn the volume up--it's on mute. ~z
