The trailhead is still not melted out--parking on the side of the road and about 1/4 mile of walking. There were no other cars present when we arrived, and only one when we returned.
The trail to Twin Lake is about 70% snow and the lake remains about 70% snow-covered as well. We broke trail along the standard traverse which is still about 95% snow-covered, then up the final ridge which is deep snow that won't likely melt out for at least another 4-6 weeks. A glider was riding the thermals around East Bearhead as we climbed. The summit rocks and lookout remnants are completely buried under snow. Despite the clouds, the views of Rainier were great. Looking over toward Summit Lake, it too is 100% snow covered as is the entire basin around it.
Not sure what to make of the low snow-pack reports I'm seeing on TV. I come up here almost every spring and this is the most May snow I've seen in a long, long time.
