I am planning to attend: Tom, Nancyann (2, almond apple cake, paper plates, cups, utensils), RichP, JimK, Damian (baked beans), GranolaGirl (maybe), Schroder, Pyrites (main dish), BarbE (main dish-Lasagne) marydave(2 - green salad). snowdog, joker, Scrooge and Larch (spaghetti, again (I hope), Snuffy (appetizer), Hiker Mama (chili and maybe dessert), Radka & Chris (apple strudel), Ski (pie), RockShadow (salad-probably warm potato salad), Kenji (3, rice dish+); Cascadetraverser (2, sandwiches), Triciaann (dessert), Ancient Ambler (appetizer), raising3hikers (appetizer), Hanzsek (appetizer - chicken satay),
You can order a calendar here from mixbook. If you just want 1 calendar use coupon code REFER2017 to get the cost down to $10.98 (11x8.5" calendar) or $22.98 (14x11" calendar) via budget shipping (upgrade shipping if you need it by Christmas).
Reserved a 2018 Calendar for pickup at the social:
11x8.5: Schroder (tbd)
14x11": Cascadetraverser (tbd)
Social: Friday, Dec 8, 7-10 PM at www.maltbyclub.org (map)
The homeless gear drive is completely optional. The need is for used packs, sleeping bags, tents, tarps, ground pads, and coats. If you have used boots, bring em along- we'll find a home for them. You can bring these things to the social, or contact Damian or Kim Brown by PM and we'll arrange to pick these things up. Receipts will be available but will require an email exchange w/Facing Homelessness. If you have questions about Facing Homelessness Seattle you can check them out on the web, or feel free to contact Damian. In addition to helping out with some basic needs they are very involved in sustainable solutions to Seattle's homeless problem especially housing.

I agree. I like to plan around the moon in the darker part of the year.
Also have some coats to donate so I hope this shindig is happening. Will you be accepting cash to help cover venue costs?

We should have enough in the kitty to cover the cost (thanks to everyone who remember to use our Amazon shopping link at the top of the forum).
As far as moon phases, the calendar vendor does not provide that option. I suppose we can always add it as a text holiday.

Many of us long time hikers have several items in our closets that would qualify (I know I do). I have coordinated with the leadership of Facing Homelessness, a community organized 501c3 non-profit that provides basic needs for the homeless from their office in the U District. They are very excited about this and will take all of the above items we can collect for immediate distribution. |
While it's great that we are thinking about adding a charitable element to the gathering, this is a terrible choice. Most homeless are homeless because of mental illness or drug addiction, usually both. A new (or used) tent is the exact opposite of what they need. These encampments are havens for drug use, violence and rape, not to mention a horrible blight on the neighborhoods where they pop up. Most of the homeless who are here have come here from elsewhere, precisely because Seattle has this pathological tendency to enable or even encourage their self-destructive behavior.
Aren't there educational organizations working to get underprivileged youth into the wilderness? Wouldn't those organizations be more worthy recipients?

Well Foist I appreciate your view and respect your opinion. Though having personally spent many hours in the worst of Seattle's homeless camps and knowing many of the inhabitants my own personal observations differ significantly from your summary. Also, the media has been a poor source on this topic IMHO. You are welcome to start another discussion in the Saloon or another forum on this, but this thread will be kept to discussion about the social.
I really hope you show up and do not feel obligated to contribute to the drive. I will add this note to the Wiki section so people understand they are under no obligations regarding the gear drive.

OK. My point was not to boycott the social, but just suggest that there might be a better place to direct the donations. Personally, I'm unlikely to attend for unrelated practical reasons, but even if I manage to come this year, I'm inclined not to donate anything, whereas I would if a more constructive and less controversial charity were chosen (and I would try to donate even if I wasn't able to go to the social, I'm sure there would be a way to do that). And I'm sure many others feel the same way, so that's a shame.

I have a class Sat morning, Dec. 9 (and live about 1800 miles away), but would like to attend some year.
Could someone please explain the drill: bring food to share? hours? Is there usually some sort of talk, slide show, or presentation?
Thanks!

Songs2: To address your questions- it is typically a potluck the evening ( always great food!) and a slideshow of the finalists for each month of the Calendar contest, with the winner revealed. Terribly exciting!
Last year I believe it was just after the holidays? Many people get booked up this time of year & a bit party fatigued.
Also, the venues under consideration will have more availability in early January.
A Sunday night is often a good choice for lack of traffic & work constraints.

Well you could always fly in and find out then catch the red-eye home. I am offering 25% airfare discounts to NWH members for the holidays.

Thank you, Snowdog and Tom.
Gosh, 25% off Southwest fares and it would be practically free!

Need a few volunteers for the charitable gear giving for those who are not attending but have gear they wish to donate.
I live in Shoreline so can handle meeting people in Seattle from downtown to the county line.
Need someone in other locations; Lynnwood, Everett, the south end, and east side (NE and SE).
If you're willing to meet people to accept their donations until the date of the gig, let me know.
No stoves, please.
I'll do up a general post to let folks know once we begin collecting.

I can also meet up with folks to collect donations from anyone unable to attend. GranolaGirl has also offered. Thx for organizing this option Kim!

Darn! I was thinking about putting the effort in to organize this again this year, but others have beat me to it! Unfortunately the chosen date of Dec 8th I will still be in Edmonton
My last day of work (for good) here is the 15th of Dec though, so it was close! On the bright side, I will be able to attend the Bulger party for the first time since 2012! That'll be exciting.
Have fun everyone!

The Mountaineers accept gear and clothing donations for just this purpose.

So, if a person is attending, they should bring any gear donations to the event?
I should be able to put together one full kit, a pack, decent tent, camping pad, down bag, warm coat and a tarp.

Donation is optional; but yes, take it to the event if you're going!
