We have lost the greatest today....to make it worse, it happened in a year with so many other deaths, however yours is different. You're the one I have looked up to more than anyone else. The one I have idolized, admired, and inspire to be. You lived the life no one has ever lived, and likely no one will ever get to experience again. You invented lifestyle climbing, and changed the culture of american climbing forever. You are probably the only one to dismiss the mantra that there are bold climbers and there are old climbers, but there are no old, bold climbers. You were certainly the exception here. RIP Fred Beckey...you will be remembered
I am honored to have met you...if only briefly. You always had what seemed like an endless amount of new climbing projects roaming through your head. I am sure you have inspired thousands of people throughout your life, and for that, I say thank you.
Climb on man...I hope you find renewed youth and an endless sea of new mountains wherever you end up next

Sad.
But that is life. We are born, grow old and die.

RIP Fred, they broke the mold after that one. A long life well lived

A great climber who brought greatness to those around him, he'll be missed but I'm sure VERY well remembered for a long time to come. A huge source of inspiration - I'm glad his time here was long.

Fortunately, Dirtbag, the documentary celebrating Beckey's life and accomplishments, was completed not a moment too soon. Although Fred was a local icon, he didn't receive the wider recognition he deserved, imo. Dirtbag has/will spread his legend to a wider audience. The latter half of the film offers a surprisingly elegiac tone poem on aging.
At the September screening, we learned:
- Beckey's health had taken a turn for the worse, and he was using a wheelchair.
- There are plans to do something with his large cache of journals, notes and drawings.

Dammit
His books inspired me and became well worn and then some.

Some really nice Fred photos, nordique. Of other "luminaries", as well.

I also checked to see if Fred's Wikipedia entry had been updated--it had--and noticed a nice recent photo of Fred--one of my photos of Fred!
I bought Fred's little red book--the 1961 Climber's Guide to the Cascade and Olympic Mountains--way back in 1961, the year I started climbing--and when I was living on the east coast--but planning to move west. I got Fred to to sign it, many years later, when Fred was lecturing about an historical book of his--back when Fred had a big brown beard--at the old Mountaineers place near Queen Anne. Fred was born twenty years before me and, this Wednesday, I'll rock climb for my 96th day so far this year. Fred is still inspiring rock climbers, after all these decades!
