Due to ongoing damage by skiers and snowboarders, the lookout is no longer available as a shelter from November through May. Travelers are advised to travel self-contained.

Oh, that's quite disappointing, but I support the decision if it's necessary to protect the building.

Bummer. Somebody was a jackass. Do you know for a fact it was a skier or snowboarder? I know thats the majority to the hut in winter but I am curious how you know.

I'd guess the issue is winter use, not what kind of travel method people used. Trying to force the fixtures open when they're covered in snow or ice, or leaving them open during storms, would cause damage.

Do snowmobilers typically make the extra effort to walk up to the lookout from the lakes?

It is not unexpected. People are such jackasses where fire lookouts are concerned. They rarely see beyond their own needs and harm these historic structures. What a bummer. David....I am now retired and would be happy to help restore Winchester if my services are needed. I never met a fire lookout I didn't like.

That sucks. This is why we can't have nice things. I'd pitch in on repair work - there could be worse places to put in some service...

Bob, Keep me in mind if you and David decide to do some repairs.

PBLO dominated mainly by snow machinists who do not overnight.

More than just one. The damage is annual:broken windows, damaged storm door and interior door, threshold kicked to bits by ski boots, crap all over snowfield despite blue bag availability. Skiers/snowboarders, because they use their gear to prop the shutters, heedless of snow-loading, or wind that shimmies the gear loose to crash back through a window. Years of this. Skiers/snowboarders do not care about Winchester's 80+ year history; it's just a "hut" to them. The shutter was repaired and the storm door re-mounted over a couple of maintenance visits, but that repair work interferes with my ability to do constantly needed painting.
All fixed
All fixed
The Forest Service and MBC board finally agreed that this was necessary to prevent ongoing deep structural damage to a fire lookout on the National Historic Register. Skiers/snowboarder were unable to police their own group because of incompatible priorities (sick lines and pow pow versus stewardship)

I'd also pitch in for a work party. I finally visited it this year and it's a great lookout. I'm at least useful for hauling stuff up there.

I don't mean to be a pessimist, but given the annual abuse you describe, would a closure actually have any effect? I'm guessing there are not a lot of resources for enforcement.

Part of the problem is these structures are designed to be battened down during the winter -- not opened. For a winter use hut -- we need things like this south of the 50th parallel
All of those BC huts have a per person per night fee ($10 - $12 CDN) and a group of volunteers that help maintain them.
