you need to take into account if its dangerous in the area such as if there is a known heavy bear presence or if there has been any maulings of late

The paranoia about bears on this board is weird. There are bears all over the Cascades and Olympics. Don't hear about any maulings, remote location or otherwise.

Gents, Ya'll are using the wrong topography. Everyone knows that once scorned, the most remote and inaccessible place is a woman's heart. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif Tom PS: This theorem is best not tested with "trial and error."

it is known that bears prefer to congregate in very remote areas

Bears can also tell if you are scared of them and don't like them, and they are more likely to bite your butt if you are. Never ever let facts get in the way of your favorite paranoias.

That's why they lurk in places where no one can hear you scream! they choose to live there because they just can wait for you to come to them the more bears, the more remote it is!

Somebody should tell of those bears that are in frequently visited valleys in the Olympics they aren't supposed to be there. I've heard many reports of a bear right by Cascade Pass, one of the most popular (and relatively short and easy) destinations in North Cascades NP. Also Glacier Basin in Rainier NP, always seems to be bear encounters there. Again easily accessible and relatively popular. Either a lot of confused bears, or the proposed theory is inaccurate.

congregate: gather into a crowd or mass. Doesn't sound like something bears like to do at all. Maybe that's why almost nobody (including yours truly till a few minutes ago) didn't know that a group of bears is known as a sleuth. They like to live in places where there is food, which quite often is not that remote for us humanoids.
