Very much to my surprise, snow coverage along the trail is still very thin. There is absolutely no need for any type of flotation until after reaching the A-frame, and even then you still might get by without. I carried my skis for at least the first mile. Even after that there was still grass and logs popping out all over the place.
After reaching the A-frame I put on skis and my partner put on snowshoes. It was interesting to see that they've put a steel gate resembling a jail-cell door on the A-frame entrance, apparently because of vandalism.
We made a detour over to Cloud Cap and then headed up to treeline. Snow coverage above the A-frame was good enough to get some decent turns in. The winds above treeline were roaring so we didn't linger for very long.
It was a really beautiful day but the area isn't quite ready for ski touring yet...or even snowshoeing.
