Even with the best maps, on the largest screens for handheld GPSr, you can't see much detail when you zoom out.
So, I like the NF maps because you can get a great overview of an entire NF, or large segments thereof. The Forest Travel maps are a good compliment so you know what roads can be legally traveled.
They are useful to me for planning vehicle approaches and routes to take so I can plan to travel past places that pique my interest as I travel .
Now-a-Days most of them are printed on waterproof material so they are also reasonably durable. I rarely travel in MT, ID, or WY without them. WA...not so much. Our NF road network in WA is less extensive than other western states.

I can't remember the last time I bought a paper Forest Service map.
Some years ago I purchased all the forests in the state along with all the ranger districts. Believe I also got the wilderness areas. Basically all maps for this state. Have relied on the ranger district maps the most to verify road numbers and the like so far as driving directions.
