What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

I've been looking at getting one of these for a while since the curtis rafts are impossible to find and the alpackas are very expensive. I just don't know what floor material would be best for our alpine lakes or if the ultralight is durable enough.
If anyone has any tips I'd really appreciate it.

The Hi-Lakers have a guided DIY program to build both a "Curtis Replica" and new in 2017, also the packraft mentioned in this post. The program is currently in hiatus until spring. (see right column on main web page.)
I own 3 Curtis rafts, 2 double bottom and 1 single bottom. The material on the bottom holds up really well, but I am also reasonably careful with them. They have been used a lot over the years. I have had random punctures in other areas (not the bottom), but that's a different story/problem A bit of Aquaseal takes care of that.

This has be interested for sure!
How about the "Air tight zipper"? Is it really just a future point of failure or a real necessity for repairs?

No way I'd ever put a zipper in a raft, that sounds nuts to me. Interesting idea tho.

Have you checked out Flyweight Designs? I've had one for about 5 years now. Weighs 3 to 3-1/2 pounds. Has a durable floor. I use my closed cell foam pad on the bottom. It keeps the cold off me fine. I have never had to do any repair on it. The fabric is quite tough. They have a 300# rating. I've had it loaded up to about 250# with my fat ass and a full pack. A great raft IMO.

Looks like they are all out of stock - With that price I'm going to keep an eye on it though.

Seems to be the norm for them. But it is Christmas time too.
