I got together with Laura Newman for an ascent of Harris Mountain. Laura has done an incredible amount of peaks in a short amount of time and is well integrated in the peakbagging community. We started behind some vacation homes and hiked off-trail to reach the northwest ridge crest of the peak. Near the summit I found the best fossils I have ever seen on a hike.

We spent a half hour up there and then parted ways. I had not planned to do Griffith prior to the trip, but the east ridge looked so inviting. Laura was gracious to let me go with no expectations to accompany her on the descent. She even seemed stoked for me, which I really appreciated.

I descended to the saddle and then found an old mining road. This road is still in very good condition and made navigating some minor cliffs quite easy. Higher up the road vanished. I scrambled up one class 3 chimney so as to stay on the crest and avoid traversing. After that I went to the summit, which was cold and windy. I then descended the main south loop trail to near the bottom, where I detoured on another old road to return to my car more directly.

Nice fossils. This time of year it's a little hard to see dry ground and sunny skies.

It's great to see these trip reports from you as La Niña becomes more firmly entrenched with every passing day. Thanks for taking the time to share them with us! up.gif
