I noticed that the Paradise lot is empty and unplowed today. The MORA Twitter feed says nothing since yesterday. I checked around and it turns out that the National Parks, OUR National Parks, have explicit direction from Zinke to not use the word "closed" or to post status'. I don't know yet if the Longmire gate is open or how other parks are affected, but at the very minimum services are CLOSED and at least portions of our parks are CLOSED. I'd say check before you go, but with an active "lack of information" campaign, I'm not sure that's even possible. So here we are...sigh.

If not now, when?

The Longmire webcam shows lots of cars and folks wandering around. No signs of any plowing activity at Paradise, however.

Interesting, Olympic National Park posted a closure notice on their Hurricane Ridge twitter feed.

Guidelines from Department of Interior call for the parks to remain as accessible as possible during the shutdown. Seems like a very reasonable policy given the circumstances.

I've seen a few social media posts from parks/forest explaining what to expect and to use at your own risk (more so than usual). Sounds like MORA didn't do something like that, but agree that folks should see what they can sleuth out on facebook/twitter/instagram to see if there's anything.

You think this is going to last that long? Maybe. It was 16 days in 2013.

They've also been ordered to not disseminate the directive from Zinke telling them to not use the word "closed". Seems like a good opportunity to exercise FOIA rights.

If not now, when?

It was 3 weeks in 1995, courtesy of Newt Gingrich and the Republican win in '94.

but this is different, no? last time they closed them in the sense that what resources they had were used to chase people out of the parks. this time they are closed in the sense that they're doing no work (including possibly not unlocking gates), but if you can get in they won't kick you out.

Interesting that in 2013 shutdown the obama administration hired extra security to keep people out and even give them tickets for parking along the road to take a photograph. This administration is basically saying you're welcome to go on in and enjoy your public land, but there's no services and you're on your own. What a fascist!

I wonder if that means I can go camping without a permit next weekend. At least they have an excuse not to plow the road.
Right and can I go out and cut some firewood without a permit?

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

I don't know, CAN you? Are you physically capable of completing such a task?

Well, anything goes I guess. I'm going to take my sled to Mt. Rainier and attempt the first winter solo snowmobile summit of Mt. Rainier. Gotta do it, it's in my blood

Sure, are you capable of not being a smartass?

When we had the last closure, I believe in 2013, when the closures were "weaponized" the Enchantments Lakes were closed - at least the permitting process was closed. I enjoyed several nights there - only time I've been able to get a permit. Too bad this one's in the middle of the winter or I'd be going back.
