This is the Baldy over by Yakima. Not the Easton/Cle Elum one. Or the Olympic one. Not the Chelan Baldy, either.
It was hard to believe that it was February today, even by eastern Washington standards. Warm and sunny -- almost 60 degrees. Hiked in a t-shirt the entire time. Wore hiking boots and pants but was wishing that I was in trail runners and shorts after a few minutes.
This is a fairly easy summit. The trail is short and the gain is minimal. It's not a terribly exciting mountain but it sure beats hiking in a monsoon on the west side.
4 miles RT with 2,000 ft. of gain.

That looks like more than 2000' down! Thanks for the east side hiking idea.

I went up baldy this morning, too. I wonder if I saw you or our paths just didn't cross due to the variation of the trails near the bottom. I was on the peak between 9:30-11 and then did selah butte afterwards.

I started around 11. Baldy was actually my third choice for the day. I was originally going to hike up Jolly Mountain. I drove all the way down Salmon La Sac road expecting to find shallow, crusty snow so all I had was 22" snowshoes rather than my skis. The snow ended up being pretty soft and deep and the snowshoes just weren't cutting it, so I bailed. Plan B was to hike Umtanum Ridge starting from the Big Pines Recreation area. Little did I realize that there was no river crossing from that point, and I wasted about an hour looking for one. Plan C was Baldy. You probably saw me driving up and down the road in a red Jeep looking lost.

60 degrees and sun is where it's at. Baldy is part of Umtanum Ridge too. According to wikipedia it is 55 miles long. The only bridge in that area over the river is at Umtanum Ck Canyon, unfortunately.

I would agree.
But ooooh man, if you time it perfectly, it's extremely rewarding.
I've only been one time and its one of my all time favorite spring hike trips.
I'm my trip report, I mentioned "I wish these photos were scratch & sniff" That desert aroma was intoxicating
Thanks for the memories and reminding me to revisit and reminisce...

Just_Some_Hiker, we were up on Baldy yesterday as well. Got down around 10:30 am, must have just missed you.
You probably don't remember, but we met you on Mt. Daniel last June (?). Would have been nice to run into you again!

raising3hikers, we were up on Baldy yesterday as well. We were the couple you met (i.e., flew past) on the way up. I've enjoyed your TRs for years - nice to finally meet you in person!
We ended up checking out Umtanum Creek Canyon after Baldy.

Yep, I remember! That was a great trip other than the summit being a socked in.
