Steve and I were on the trail leading from the main parking lot around 10ish under partly sunny skies and initial temp of 41 degrees. I was really surprised at the near complete absence of snow as well as the dryness of the trail heading back towards the main waterfall, it is February so the highlights of the trip were the geology, and just getting out and trying to put some on and off trail miles on. The vegetation has not had time to green up, no early wildflowers, and the mostly cloudy skies left quite a few dark and shadowy areas. The lakes were all melted out where last year on February 16th on a trip out there the lakes were all frozen. We gained the upper bench and followed it around the East side of the coulee to the Pass above Dusty Lake, from there we hiked East near the basalt cliffs dropping down into the Dusty Lake area, we followed the land mass back NW to it's end then made our way across boulders and talus beside and beyond Dusty Lake and into the scab land of the central coulee hiking that until we could find a viable route up onto the ridge separating both sections of coulee, then over to the highpoint of the ridge, I think I had an elevation of 1295'. At that point we had lunch overlooking the entire area, it is pretty amazing terrain with a unique geologic history. This has all most become an annual pilgrimage with a lot of variations to be hiked. We followed our route back down into the coulee then West to the main North - South trail closing the loop near the parking lot. It turned out to be quite a nice day when the sun was out and temps did hit mid 50's with calm winds. I wish we could have tagged some more training miles, but the dogs were waiting at home for a walk so we did what we could given the time frame. 8.2 miles, 1300'.

Such a neat area I have yet to visit. It seems like winter is over in the desert areas.

It was 62 when I was uptown a little bit ago but NOAA weather radio says cooler temps ahead, whatever. I'm calling winter for Wenatchee this year we didn't have much. Training days ! hink.gif

Loved your photos. I've seen quite a few reports from there already, but yours was the most inspiring so far!

No we didn't see anything in the water, no rising, no ripples probably still pretty cold. We didn't see anything in the lakes above Frenchman Coulee either.
