Taking advantage of the last in a short streak of sunny days we started hiking at 10 am on Smithbrook Rd. We had heard from others that snowshoes would be unnecessary so we left them at home and booted the 2.7 miles up to the turnoff to the Smithbrook TH.
From here we followed a well-worn path, now using microspikes, to the saddle between Lichtenberg and McCausland. We stayed right for the final ascent and were standing on the summit 3 hours after leaving the car. Unfortunately, a weather front was moving in right as we arrived but the wind was relatively calm which allowed us to lunch for 1/2 hour before the trip down.
Some skiers we saw on the road walk out will be happy with the new snow today.
9.3 miles and 2700' of gain.

Without having to wear snowshoes, Smithbrook Road seemed less of an ordeal.
Nice day, despite losing out on the sun.

Not much to add except it was a mellow day with a hard track put in by many parties ahead of us. I thought we'd have a cold wind but the sun warmed us on the way up and the wind never showed up.
A couple had camped the previous night on the flat ridge before the last uphill to the summit. We made some additions to what they left behind.

Nice trip! I like blue skies, but the clouds can be dramatic too
I noticed the huge icicles across the valley on Lichtenberg! Those look almost as tall as a person perhaps!

We saw those too and wondered about the rust color. Maybe some dirt seeping through? In BarbE's photo they look nearly the size of the smaller trees.

I had a hunch you guys were nwhikers folk when we passed. I'm the lady that was coming down from higher up Smithbrook, with the dog attached to my waist. We chatted briefly about snowshoe trenches.

Nice not to have to do heroic trailbreaking sometimes eh?
I'm appreciating one of the wide photos of Lichtenberg that I think shows a fun steep ski line that a friend and I skied some years back on a stable powder day. There's some complex terrain over there!!
