I joined my fellow Canyoneers for a pre-hike of Ironwood Wash; the public version would take place @ the end of the month. For this hike we had Frank Colver along, the Canebrake resident who went through the official process of naming the wash, so he had great stories to tell of his various explorations of the area & overall was a helpful source of info. I carpooled w/another Canyoneer to the trailhead, arriving a little early so we had plenty of time to gear up & chat. Once everyone arrived, we started up the wash. cool.gif

Somewhere along the line, we came across a poor critter who looked like it was struggling to get back inside a hole in the sandy bank of the wash. frown.gif

We continued on, checking out all the plants.

People were particularly excited about this plant:
We saw some "poor upside down cholla". dizzy.gif

Continuing on, Frank took us up a side wash to the "Ironwood Arch", which I'm told is important to put in quotes. hmmm.gif

We backtracked to the main wash & continued on, eventually picking a lunch spot & then an area that was good to turn around as it was more rugged & steep further on.

That is really cool, I have never seen it. Chylismia cardiophylla.
That looks like a wild tobacco, perhaps Nicotiana obtusifolia, the "desert tobacco." I wonder if the natives smoked it.
Mojave Indigo Bush, Psorothamnus arborescens. Very nice!

& here is the public version of the hike we did on 1/27/18. Everything went well & we did not go quite as far up the canyon as we had for the pre-hike. Nice day & good turnout. On the way up:
