Saw this report on WH&C, posted on Feb 11, which made it sound unpleasantly sketchy:
Quote:
Made the summit of Mt. Hood yesterday. It was incredibly strenuous and much different than it was in May last year, regardless of "springlike" conditions or the very cold temps. The entire mountain was covered in awful rime ice and hoar frost literally from Palmer on up, and it was extremely unstable and fragile for the most part. The ice conditions were pretty similar to broken glass/trying to climb on a scree field. Descent was absolute hell as the surface warmed up, and icefall hazard was very high. We went up the Pearly Gates and were the first ones up on the mountain, but came down the Old Chute since the Pearly Gates pretty much self destructed somewhat right before we were about to descend. Downclimbing with two ice tools/axes was pretty much a necessity all the way down the Hogsback since both the chutes and Hogsback were much steeper than they used to be. The Bergschrund has also begun opening and was about 1 foot or wider, and quite deep. Everyone in my party got pelted with ice at some point on the way down. We made the mistake of wearing soft boots instead of hard boots which made frontpointing on the way down much worse than it could've been. I was getting pretty psyched out and exhausted on the way down, and ran into some guys who stopped to check in and it was much appreciated!

It was just reported by someone in contact with SAR that the fallen climber fell into a fumarole and was having CPR performed.

Thats a bummer. Can't imagine the conditions at 10,000 feet was anything other than ice early in the day(and possibly lasting all day even in sun). Rainier was literally glowing with ice yesterday.

Definitely some sensationalist reporting going on. So far one climber has been airlifted off the mountain.

I expect some of the climbers saw everything that's going on and decided to hunker down and wait for conditions to improve. Reporters would probably call that stranded when it's hopefully more of a temporary thing.

Reporters might also see 32 climbers standing around waiting to help haul a stretcher down and call that "stranded".

It's so bizarre that with Mt Hood they always immediately send news helicopters over. I don't remember seeing that kind of reporting for Mt Rainier or Baker incidents here? Anyway, the news showed the group of stranded people trying to signal the news copter. Apparently the group is not yet aware of ongoing rescue operations. Eerily similar to the big incident years ago where news choppers were all over the incident before SAR was there. Wish there would be an immediate clearing of the airspace in these situations frown.gif.

Mt. Rainier and Mt. Baker (or parts thereof) are in designated wilderness areas, which have fairly stringent restrictions on flying in the area. Other than that, it comes down to whether or not the news agency hears about an incident. If they do, they'll be there.

Me too, but unfortunately there is no authority to do so, even when the news helicopters are interfering/making things more unsafe for the rescuers/subjects.

During a quick Facebook check earlier I seen someone had posted the live feed for the rescue. Was horrified when I looked to see a zoomed shot of a guy doing what appeared to be chest compressions. Bad timing on my part, bad taste on the video. They did cut away just after, but I only watched for 30 seconds or so. Hope the best for those involved.

Heard on the radio a few minutes ago that the one climber died and that there are 7 others stranded and that they are hoping to get them off the mountain before snow starts falling in earnest later tonight. RIP and condolences to anyone who knew the deceased and best of luck to the rescuers and remaining climbers.

It seemed as if there were half a dozen falling rocks at any moment in the frame.

How exactly did somewhere between 7 and 32 climbers get "stranded" on Mt. Hood? Is that to mean that they climbed up but felt unqualified to down-climb and thus need an air-lift from the top of the route? No judgement intended, just curious exactly what is meant by "stranded" here...
